AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is an elective class that teaches students study skills, organization and college-readiness. AVID teachers utilize the AVID standards created here at Colin Powell to guide their students in preparing for college. Students participate in Tutorials two days per week, WIC-R strategies two days per week and Motivational Activities and Binder Checks one day per week. The Tutorials are peer led study sessions, the WIC-R strategies are Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration and Reading, while the activies and projects vary but include socratic seminar, internet projects, philosophical chairs and field trips. Students who apply to AVID must be basic, proficient or advanced proficient in reading and math.
