Hello Millikan Community,
I have spent the last two mornings on the corner of Palo Verde and Belen watching the students as they arrived to campus. I was on the corner because of numerous complaints that I have received about students not following the rules of the road and putting themselves in danger. I witnessed students who piled off city buses walking across the streets in mass and sometimes jaywalking. I watched individual students from the neighborhood jaywalk in front of oncoming traffic. When traffic backed up on Palo Verde at the Rite Aide traffic light I observed parents allowing their children to exit their cars and walk across traffic lanes. I heard cars blow their horns and saw some drivers wave at our students with an extended middle finger. I cannot stress how important it is for all of us to make sure our students obey the rules of the road.
This Saturday is the Millikan Prom. Our Prom will be held at the Seacliff Country Club in Huntington Beach. The Prom will start at 8:00 P.M. and all students must arrive by 10:00 P.M. The prom will end at 12:00 midnight. I find it necessary to make this statement, it is mandatory that all students attend the Prom free of drugs and alcohol. A breathalyzer will be used at the front door to ensure that our students are safe and sound.
Today at 3:15 P.M. our Rams Softball teamwill compete against Redondo Union High School in the second round of CIF play. The game will take place at Redondo Union High School, 631 Vincent Park, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. Please come out and support our Lady Rams on their road to CIF victory.
Tomorrow our RAMSET (Robert A. Millikan Student Energy Team) students will be competing on Lake Skinner near Temecula. They have built a solar powered boat that they will race for speed and endurance. The competition will take the next three days.
One of Millikan’s very own, Paulina Guzman, won the CIF Masters Championship in diving. She competed against a strong field from throughout Southern California and came out on top. This is the same Paulina Guzman who competes at the Olympic level representing the country of Guatemala.
Congratulations to the Boys’ Volleyball team for their successful season. They had a terrific season and extended their season into the first round of CIF.
Congratulations to Ana Hernandez and Javier Zamorano who were awarded College Success Scholarships by the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) and the College Access Foundation of California. The awards were presented on May 7th at the Japanese Gardens at CSULB. Interestingly enough there are two additional scholarships available for community college or vocational /career tech bound seniors at Millikan that were not awarded because no senior applied for these funds.
On May 6th, Bashir Hassan was awarded a scholarship by the Star Achievers Dollars for Scholars. The scholarship was awarded during a program and dinner at the Carson Community Center.
Congratulations to Shannon Diaz and Peter Jarzomb who were awarded scholarships by the KIWANIS of Long Beach. Alan Davidson and Pam Dinwell of the KIWANIS interviewed many students and selected our two students to receive the award. Unfortunately our two recipients were not able to attend the awards ceremony because they were taking AP exams.
I am very proud of all these students and their accomplishments. I am going to run off now and watch a Dance Assembly in the auditorium. There is never a dull moment at RAMHI!
Best wishes,
Jeff
