Hello Millikan Community,
Recently our ROTC cadets went to a competition in Torrance. The cadets competed with as many as 38 other ROTC programs from high schools throughout the area. Our cadets came home with 7 of the largest trophies that I have seen in a long time. This is the last ROTC drill competition for our ROTC program and they have done an excellent job this year.
Today, we had two assemblies presented by “Rachel’s Challenge.” Rachel Scott was the first young lady killed at Columbine High School in 1999. Her father is the founder of the program to honor his daughter’s memory and create a positive change.
The goal of the program and assembly is to motivate and equip students to embrace new values of kindness and compassion so that no child is left behind because of fear and violence in their school. This is a particularly opportune time for this assembly with the events that just occurred at Virginia Tech and are currently transpiring in Boulder.
On a happier note, ninth grader Paulina Guzman, placed fourth in CIF for diving. Paulina is a young lady that I have had the pleasure to meet several times. She is an Olympic diver for the country of Guatemala and frequently travels throughout the world to represent her country in international competition.
Congratulations to Riana G. Bakhos for winning the Horatio Alger California Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial assistance to students who have financial needs and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity.
Finally, congratulations to Ms. Marilyn Anania for being chosen as one of the 25 nationwide participants in the NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) Summer Institute in Rome, Italy. She will study for 4 weeks on incorporating lessons on Italy's fine arts into lessons of Italian. The institute is also sponsored by the Italian Cultural Society of Washington, D.C. This is quite an honor.
Best wishes,
Jeff
