Millikan's AVID Program Achieves National Recognition

Millikan High School started its AVID program in the fall of 2001. On November 20th, 2006, it was designated as an AVID National Demonstration High School. Only 85 of the 2700 nationwide high school AVID programs have been awarded this standard of excellence. It is the first and only high school in Long Beach to earn this honor.

The MHS AVID program was able to achieve this through the hard work of its students and staff. The first two graduating classes (2005 & 2006) achieved several impressive statistics: 99% of the students applied to one or more four-year colleges and 82% of them were accepted to those schools; 98% of the students met the A-G requirements (mandatory coursework taken to gain admission to the UC/CSU colleges). AVID is an elective program that has grown from two classes to eleven (with more being added in 2007). It currently teaches nearly 300 students that represent all of the SLCs at Millikan.
