Hello Millikan Family and Friends,
I have wonderful memories of my Senior Prom back in 1977 at Saint Anthony’s High School here in Long Beach. Our senior class will have their opportunity to create their own Prom memories this Saturday evening from 8:00 P.M. to Midnight. The Prom’s location is the Phoenix Club in Anaheim, CA. Please advise students that being under the influence will harm their evening and will result in negative discipline. Seniors will lose their privilege to participate in senior activities, including the commencement activity. We all want our students to have a great time, but they must act responsibly.
Tonight, the Millikan Dance Department presents their yearly dance concert. This year’s production is entitled, “We Run This.” The concert starts at 6:30 P.M. The cost of a ticket is $8.00 at the auditorium door.
The Millikan Drama Department will present, The Diary of Anne Frank. This production will be held in the Black Box Theater (Room 701) on Thursday, May 25th, at 6:30 P.M., Friday, May 26th , at 6:30 P.M., and Saturday, May 27th , at 2:00 P.M. and 6:30 P.M. I have attended many of Ms. Atwell’s presentations, and they are always extremely well done. Tickets are $5.00 at the door.
Millikan High is participating in a solar-powered boating contest — Solar Cup 2006 — sponsored by The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. Teams built 15-foot-long boats with solar collection panels. The schools will face each other in sprint and endurance races during an event Friday to Sunday at Lake Skinner in Temecula. http://www.presstelegram.com/search/ci_3834484
On Thursday, May 11, thirty-one sophomores from the Peace Academy traveled up north to Stockton to debate contemporary world problems at the University of the Pacific.
The sophomore Modern World History Peace classes took part in the Contemporary World History Project. They represented the country of China and became experts in an issue area, such as: terrorism, world health, global warming, trade, and child labor. After sending communiqués to other nations over the Internet for over a month and participating in after school conferences (chat rooms), they traveled to a university to debate face to face.
Our delegation debated proposals and held strong to their country’s identity. They were amazing to watch! They dressed and acted like diplomats and made Peace and Millikan shine. The Peace Academy would like to congratulate all participants for their outstanding behavior and academic excellence.
Right now, we are in the end of the year mode, and there are many events happening throughout the final weeks to come. There are often multiple events taking place on the campus every evening. As we come to the close of a successful year at Millikan, please speak to students about making wise decisions, and seniors especially need to be careful of senioritis.
Best wishes,
Jeff
“Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. Our requirements for world leadership, our hopes for economic growth, and the demands of citizenship itself in an era such as this all require the maximum development of every young American's capacity. The human mind is our fundamental resource.”
