Hello Millikan family and friends,
As many of you already know we started today off with a bang. Upon arrival at school this morning, we were greeted by the alarming spectacle of black smoke pouring out of the basement of the Physical Education complex. This was before 7:00 AM and the Long Beach Fire Department was notified and they responded promptly. The majority of the campus was closed to students, and as they arrived the students were ushered to the Softball fields on the south end of campus. The fire department put the fire out quickly after they arrived. I truly appreciate their efforts and professionalism. Luckily, we had permission from the fire department to allow students back on campus before the normal start of the school day. The Physical Education complex was kept shut down for the rest of the day and PE classes were held in the auditorium. The students were able to complete their finals without any further interruptions. I want to publicly thank the entire Millikan High School staff for their outstanding and quick response this morning. I would also like to recognize our students for their composure and patience.
This afternoon our boys Varsity Soccer Team had an exciting game against cross town rivals Wilson High. Millikan is very pleased and proud to tell you the boys played a great game and we were able to win by a score of 3 to 1. Congratulations to the team and their coach, Rod Petkovic.
I recently e-mailed an article regarding the dangers of MySpace.Com. Here is another article from the Press Telegram regarding the same website. http://www.presstelegram.com/search/ci_3430659
Finally, congratulations to Mrs. Gwen Gibson for being nominated by a community member for the Disney Teacher Award. This award honors creativity in teaching and is quite an honor. Being nominated for this award is a huge honor and not only is Mrs. Gibson nominated, but so is her daughter. Her daughter is a very gifted K,1 & 2 teacher at New City School. As the saying goes, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
Best wishes,
Jeff and Don
