Happy New Year,

We wanted to start off your 2006 with a letter from Millikan High School. The end of the first semester is rapidly approaching, as is the beginning of the second semester.  During the most recent rainstorm, we lost a few trees and the majority of the buildings pulled through the rain with very little damage.

The final day of the first semester is January 27th and the first day of the second semester will be January 30th.  The students will take their finals on the week of the January 23rd - 27th.  On the 24th the students will take their 2nd and 4th finals.  On the 25th the students will take 1st and 3rd finals.  On the 26th the students will take their 8th and 6th finals.  Finally, on the 27th the students will take their 5th and 7th finals.  We encourage all our students to be in attendance on the day of their finals.  They should be well prepared and well rested.

On February 7th and 8th, all sophomores will be given the California High School Exit Exam, CAHSEE.  This will be the first time that our 10th graders will take this exam and we want them to not only pass, but to attain proficiency on this exam.  For the entire month of January and the first week of February, Millikan High School will promote and encourage our students to do their best on this exam.  I have included this website hosted by the California Department of Education.  This website will have all the information anyone could want regarding the CAHSEE.  http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/index.asp

Since the 10th graders are going to be taking their CAHSEE on the 7th and 8th of February, all other students are allowed to remain home.  Classes will not be held during the CAHSEE testing.  A letter to the parents will be sent home via the mail in the first weeks of January.  We would love to have 100% of our 10th graders pass the CAHSEE on their first attempt.

On Friday, February 3rd, the Millikan High School Winter Formal will be held at the Amada Club in Buena Park.  The dance will start at 8:00 P.M. and end at 12:00 midnight.  Directions are included to the Amada Club. http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&Pyt=Tmap&newFL=Use+Address+Below&addr=7025+Firestone+Blvd&csz=Buea+Park,+CA+90621&Country=us&Get%A0Map=Get+Map

Over the last three years there has been an increasing number of problems associated with a website known as MySpace.com.  On this website each user is offered the opportunity to create a personal website. Users can invite other users to be their "friends," via e-mail. People who are each others' friends may post messages to one another.  Whether or not you are someone's "friend," most profiles are accessible to viewers.  One parent recently wrote to me about her concerns with MySpace, “I wish there was a way to encourage parents to look at it, search for their own kids and see what kind of messages are going up.  It’s a scary, scary place.”  We have had students use MySpace as a platform to lambaste their friends and threaten their “enemies.”  Recently there was a fight on campus between two young ladies who are friends.  They were apparently upset by messages that were posted on MySpace.  Technology has enhanced the ability for students to get into “He said/She said” situations.  We do not want to step on anyone’s first amendment rights, but we do encourage parents to know what their students are writing and sharing on the Internet.  An article has been included from KTLA that addresses some of the problems with MySpace.com.
