MILLIKAN HIGH SCHOOL
2800 Snowden Avenue, Long Beach, California (562) 425-7441
Hello,
School's out for summer! With that said, things are still happening on a daily basis at Millikan High School. Approximately 1110 students recently finished summer school and now they are enjoying their well-deserved vacation. I want to talk about a couple of the exciting things that have happened during the summer break.
Congratulations to Sean Cumberland and Nicole Oberjuerge from the class of 2004, for being admitted to the prestigious President's Scholars Program at California State University, Long Beach. The California Legislature has recognized this program as a model for the state, and we are honored that two students from Millikan High School are part of the 68 participants from throughout California.
On June 19th, Eugene "Woody" Williams was honored during the fifth annual Ocean Conservation Awards Gala at the Aquarium of the Pacific. This award emphasizes the Aquarium's investment in educating the public about the Pacific Ocean, its inhabitants, and ecosystems. Mr. Williams was honored as an individual who had significant impact on raising awareness and implementing positive change - both environmentally and socially. Mr. Williams was recognized as a marine enthusiast who has participated in numerous education and conservation programs. He has also been instrumental in educating Millikan students regarding conservation and a healthy respect for our environment. Congratulations to Woody, we are very proud of you!
During the school year many students volunteered throughout the community to attain their Service Learning hours for graduation. Starting with the class of 2007, every high school student must complete 40 hours of Service Learning/Community Service in order to graduate. This must take place between the 9th and 12th grade years. Within the last month, I have received thank you letters from both Prisk Elementary and George Washington Carver Elementary for the helping hands that our students lent to their various projects this last school year. Our students were described as fun, enthusiastic, energetic, supportive and helpful. It is hard not to boast about a program that is doing so much good in the community.
The Rotary Club of Long Beach recognized three Millikan students for their outstanding contributions and volunteer services to empower the lives of others. The students who received the honor are Heather Hagin, Steve R. Martinez and Salinna Uy. Great job on a well deserved recognition.
I received a letter from a student teacher, Janice E. Yocky, who just finished her student teaching at Millikan High School. She states in her letter, "Working as a student teacher at Millikan High School over the past five months has been an extraordinary experience! I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have worked under the guidance of Mary Massich and Barbara Doten. I find Millikan to be a jewel of the Long Beach Unified School District. In my four years of substitute teaching throughout Long Beach, Millikan stands out as a high school whose faculty and administration display great devotion to supporting both the students and one another."
Since this will be my last e-mail for this school year, I want to publicly thank the entire staff for the hard work and devotion that they dedicate on a daily basis. Without all of you the students of Robert A. Millikan High School would not be receiving the excellent high school experience that they enjoy. As for all our students, the days of backyard barbeques, trips to the beach, hanging out at the Town Center and fun in the sun are here. Enjoy yourselves, stay safe and see you in September!
Best wishes,
Jeff
