Greetings from
Millikan,
Two Millikan
students, Claudia Bugarin and Jennifer Melancon, received scholarships from the
NAACP. This year the contest celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the
U.S. Supreme Courts landmark ruling on Brown vs. the Board of Education. This
is the ruling that struck down the “Separate but Equal,” approach to education
in the United States. The students were asked, “How has the landmark decision impacted your
education?” Claudia and Jennifer
were the only high school students from Long Beach that received this award.
As you may
already know, Millikan had an extremely successful blood drive. We collected a record 183 pints of
blood, which has the potential to affect 549 lives at Long Beach Memorial
Medical Center. Our ASB and the
committee in charge of the blood drive did an excellent job of organizing this
very successful event. We will
have a second blood drive at Millikan on March 22, 2005 and we hope to break
the 200 mark.
Millikan High
School’s very own, Malcolm Reid, received a nice write up in the Press
Telegram. Malcolm is the goalie
for the Millikan High Boys’ Varsity Waterpolo Team. He has been involved in the
sport since age 4 and his dedication is paying off. The Press Telegram states “Over his three-month crash course
at Millikan, the 17 year old has used his length to haul in 130 saves,
distribute 25 assists and grab 35 steals in the post.” Great job Malcolm!
Today, we hosted
seven community members who acted as Principal for the Day. Visiting Millikan were the following
principals; Dr. Thomas Clark -- retired optometrist, Nancy Higginson – Meals on
Wheels, Brad Wells – Vice President of Finance, J. Paul Getty Trust, Kathleen
Thurmond – President, Industrial Uniform Supply, Greg McGinity – Director of
Policy, The Broad Foundation, David Gonzalez – Special Assistant to the City
Manager, Long Beach, and Melanie Washington – Mentor MATFA (minister). The Principals met with students,
visited classrooms, supervised nutrition and lunch and had lunch with some
representatives of the student body.
The principals felt that this was a rewarding experience and will go out
into the community and spread the good news about Millikan High School.
Finally, this
Friday night is the Millikan Homecoming versus Cabrillo High School. Our Homecoming football game will start
at 7:00 P.M. The Homecoming Court
will be presented during the halftime show and the Homecoming Queen will also
be announced at this time.
Fireworks will light up the sky as the Court is announced. This game promises to be a hard fought
battle against the newest school in the Moore League. After two back to back victories on the road, Millikan
Football will be pumped to win their first game at home this season. What better night to win than Friday
night, Homecoming!
