Hello Millikan Family and Friends,

The word busy doesn’t seem to be appropriate to describe the last few weeks here at Robert A. Millikan High School.  After consulting my thesaurus, I believe the word frenetic (feverishly excited, frenzied, frantic) is the word that best fits the bill.

On Friday, May 20th we had a dozen visitors from LAUSD who wanted to discuss many aspects of our school. They stayed with us for nearly three hours.  At that same time we had two Dance Concert Assemblies in the auditorium for approximately 3000 of our students.  In the afternoon we had two first round CIF games on campus.  Our Baseball and Softball teams were engaged in games against formidable opponents.  In the evening we then had an ROTC Annual Awards Presentation in the cafeteria. We finished off the evening with a third performance in the auditorium of the Dance Concert.  Just think all of this happened in just one day at Millikan. On top of all this we held classes as usual for all our students.

I would like to thank the Church of the Latter Day Saints for their community service to Millikan High School.  On Saturday, May 21st the LDS visited Millikan with nearly 2000 volunteers.  The volunteers cleaned, shined, washed, scraped, raked, swept, moved, discarded, rearranged, sanded, painted and generally spruced up our campus.  Saturday was a beehive of activity on campus and we are the benefactors of all their community involvement.  Thank you!

Tonight, Millikan students are going to enjoy the Prom.  This year’s prom will be held at the Santa Ana Discovery Center.  The Prom will start at 8:00 p.m. and end at midnight.  The planning for the prom is intense, since it is one of the biggest social events in the young lives of many our students.  Ms. Bari Stevens-Chapman, Activities Director, and her Associated Student Body (ASB) worked very hard on this year’s prom and their efforts are very much appreciated.

Once again, I would like to offer my congratulation to both our Baseball Team and our Softball Team for advancing to the next round of the playoffs.  I will include a hyperlink to the Press Telegram article regarding both victories.

I often get information from many of my staff regarding student accomplishments.  Ms. Cleo Brown, Attendance Clerk, reports that 12th grader Andrew Sielen was selected to receive a community service award from the Long Beach Police Dept.  Andrew’s award was given on May 17th.  Excellent job Andrew!

Ms. Susana Stumf, Counselor, reports that 11th grader Rebecca Fisher will be representing Millikan High School and the South Los Angeles County area in this year’s California Junior Miss State Finals in July.  Shannon Rosales, another Junior received the South Bay title and will also compete in the Finals.  The program exists to recognize and reward young women who have distinguished themselves at school and in their community with educational scholarships.  If chosen, they will receive a $10,000 scholarship and go to compete for the national title.

Mr. Sean Martin, Auto Shop Teacher, reports that the Millikan High School Automobile Troubleshooting Team of Apolinar Gonzalez, Jesus Pulido Morales, Salvador Herrera, Kyle Cedarstaff, and Shane Burson won first place overall in the 7th annual District wide competition defeating rivals Lakewood(2nd), Poly(3rd), and Jordan(4th).  This was our school’s first win at this prestigous competition in 7 years. In addition Apolinar Gonzalez and Shane Burson tied for first place overall in the individual competition. Individual winners were awarded a 122 piece ratchet set from Craftsman Tools.

On Friday, April 22nd the Millikan Special Education Department hosted their annual Special Education Dance.  This dance is a wonderful event and is attended by special needs students from throughout the District.  The Special Ed Department and the Art Department put a great deal of effort transforming the cafeteria into a great dance party with excellent decorations, food, drink and music.

This year’s Graduation Ceremony will take place at Veterans’ Stadium on June 16th at 7:00 p.m.  This is the second year that the graduation ceremony has been held at Vets rather than in our football stadium.  The reason for this change is so that we can host more guests of our student graduates.  Best wishes to all our graduates.

Unfortunately, the Grad Night party at Castle Park in Riverside was cancelled this year due to lack of ticket sales.  For the parents of Seniors who are looking for a safe and sane way for their students to celebrate this year’s graduation, Ms. Stevens-Chapman has arranged for transportation to and tickets for Disneyland’s Grad Nite.  The cost of the event is $70.00 and this includes bus transportation and admission to the park.  Students need a contract from the Activities Office, room 643.  The contract and the cash only need to be returned to the Banker’s Office to insure a place on the bus.  Sometimes the students balk at the idea of a chaperoned graduation activity, but as a parent I cannot think of a better way for them to celebrate their accomplishment.

Best wishes,
