Dear Millikan Community,
On
Saturday, March 12th, the ROTC Programs from all of the high schools
in the Long Beach Unified School District held a Military Ball at the Long
Beach Hilton. The first dance of
the evening was a formal waltz to the Tennessee Waltz. There were approximately 600 students
in formal attire in attendance along with their instructors. One hundred students, Sgt. Christopher
Sarmiento, Mrs. Sarmiento and Sgt. Patrick Hebert represented Millikan High
School. I attended the ball along
with my wife and my daughter, and we had a great time. It was my little girl’s 9th
birthday and her first formal dance, but I digress.
The
2004 API score for Robert A. Millikan High School was 690, but we have now
received a revised score of
693. This rise in the API
score happens every year and I really can’t explain the rationale for the
changes. The school is ranked a 6
out of 10 when compared to all of the high schools in the state. We receive an 8 out of 10 when compared
to similar high schools in California.
Our target goal for the 2005 API is a score of 698. The scores of all the schools in Long
Beach are listed in the Press Telegram today.

I
would publicly like to thank Goodwill Industries of Long Beach and the South
Bay for their donation of 100 Ice Dog tickets to last Friday’s game versus the
San Diego Gulls. I appreciate the
many ways that Goodwill Industries has assisted our school, staff and students.
The tickets were donated to our staff so they could take their families to a
great hockey game. The game was
very close and the shoot off at the end added to the excitement of the
evening. The only thing that could
have made the evening better would have been an Ice Dog victory.
The
relationship between Millikan High School and the Goodwill Industries of Long
Beach and the South Bay is the type of community partnership that those of us
in education hope to develop. The
willingness of Goodwill Industries to support our school is an example of how
business can support education in the City of Long Beach.
Good News! Millikan Varsity Cheer took home the banner and first place trophy for the Large Coed Division at the Cheerleaders of America Open National Championship. The team performed their best ever and took Texas down! Ms. Massich writes, “I am so happy for the kids. We are also proud of our J.V. team for taking 2nd place. Their excellent performance was reflected in their confidence and Ram pride!”
I recently
read an article in the Press Telegram regarding a Millikan High School Senior
by the name of Samuel Robert
Osterholt. On November 17, 2004,
Sam completed the Boy Scouts of America’s requirement to achieve the highest
rank of Eagle Scout. I know in
the past that some of our students have received the highest ranking in the
Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, but this is the first time that I have
read about it in the Press. Attaining
the rank of Eagle Scout is a huge accomplishment and Sam should be applauded.

On a bit of a disturbing note, the Long Beach Police Department has assigned a team of officers to patrol in the area of all the high schools in the city. The effort is intended to provide safe passage home for local students. Although we are enjoying a safe and calm climate on campus this year, the more security the better as far as I am concerned.
The Press Telegram reports, “Four additional
uniformed officers will be assigned to areas around each of the city's five
high school campuses from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.” I have seen the increased presence on
the corner of Spring and Palo Verde and on the streets surrounding the
school. http://www.presstelegram.com/Stories/0,1413,204%257E27141%257E2763036,00.html
