MILLIKAN HIGH SCHOOL

2800 Snowden Avenue, Long Beach, California (562) 425-7441

Hello,

The summer is over and as usual the weather is hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk.  I guess it wouldn't be the opening of school in Southern California unless we all broil.

Millikan High School has selected three main goals to work on this school year.  First, we plan to improve our student achievement for all our student body.  Second, we want to close the achievement gap among our students while we still focusing on improving the rigor of curriculum for all students.  Finally, we plan on building a positive school wide atmosphere of collaboration and trust through open communication.  Our two major academic areas of focus will remain literacy and mathematics.

I wanted to share some very good news regarding our Academic Performance Index, (API) score and our Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) score.  Millikan High School improved by 29 points to an API of 691.  This means that we reached both our API and our AYP.  This means that all our subgroups performed well and met their academic targets for the 2003/04 school year.  You can probably hear a collective sigh of relief regarding the test scores.  Our school has come a long way, but we still have a great deal of work.  Fortunately, this is great news to start off the new school year!

I wanted to share another piece of information regarding one of our very own teachers.  The Los Angeles County Office of Education has named Mr. Stephen Dublin as one of the teachers of the year.  This accomplishment is quite impressive and justly deserved.  Way to go Mr. Dublin!

Sincerely,

You extremely warm but enthusiastic principal,  Jeff
