School's out for summer!  With that said, things are still happening on a daily basis at Millikan High School.  Approximately 1110 students recently finished summer school and now they are enjoying their well-deserved vacation.  I want to talk about a couple of the exciting things that have happened during the summer break. Principal's Message June 1, 2004

The beautiful thing about this time of year is that our school year is rapidly drawing to a close.  The sad thing about this time of year is that we are going say goodbye to another senior class.  This senior class has approximately 830 members who are schedule to "Walk Stage" on June 10th Continued...

Principal's Message May 25, 2004

Last night and tonight the Robert A. Millikan High School Dance Department is presenting “Dance the Night Away.” I just returned from the student assembly for this same performance and I must admit that I was quite impressed. The student dancers did an excellent job and the dances were lively and well staged. Thanks to all the young ladies and gentlemen who put in so many hours of preparation for this event. Your hard work and dedication is evident. Continued...

Principals Message May 19, 2004

Hello again,
Although it seems like I just finished one of these updates regarding Millikan activities, there is a great deal happening at this time that I would like to share. As we wind down the school year with just sixteen days left until graduation, things are not slowing down they literally are winding up! Campus life is never dull and at this time of year, campus life is a whirlwind of activity. Continued...

Focused Walk Through Provides Insight-May 3
On Monday, May 3rd, Millikan High School hosted a Focused Walkthrough. The purpose of the Focused Walkthrough is to step back and take a look at the delivery of curriculum on our campus. There were approximately 50 members in the classroom visitation team, which included 7 Millikan students from our Principals’ Student Advisory Group. The students added a fresh perspective to the classroom visitations. Our visitors included Curriculum Leaders from every subject area. Charles Salter, Principal of Aliso Niguel High School and Michael Navia, Principal of Cubberley School also participated in the visitation. I am very proud to report that during the evaluation process, Millikan High School did very well and received a number of commendations from the visitors. This is a link to a PowerPoint™ presentation that was shared demonstrating the effectiveness of our AVID support program. This will play in your browser.

Close Celebrity Game-May 1
On Saturday, May 1st , the staff of Robert A. Millikan High School took on the Stars of the Hollywood Knights Basketball Team. There were more than 1000 spectators in the audience to watch this exciting game. The school staff gave the Knights a run for their money and kept the game extremely close. The Knights pulled out a victory in the final seconds of the basketball game. The proceeds from the Celebrity Basketball Game are going to be used in Millikan’s endeavor to build a new school marquee on Palo Verde Avenue. <http://www.hollywoodknights.com/hk/schedule/0304/04millikan.htm>

Power Puff Football Surprise-April 30
On Friday, April 30th, the senior girls’ team took on the underclass women in a Powder Puff Football Game. The game started at 6:30 p.m. and it quickly became clear that the team of Juniors and Sophomores was going to win the game quite handily. The young ladies put on a great game and everyone in attendance seemed to have a great time.

Jazz Showcase Huge Success-April 30
Also on Friday, April the 30th, the Jazz Showcase had eleven bands present and was one of Millikan’s best efforts. Millikan’s Jazz Band performed last and was well received. Awards for Millikan included: best soloist Paul Curtis, Best section, Trumpets and a rating of Superior for the Millikan ensemble. As we host this event and the band festival it becomes very obvious that Millikan lacks two important pieces of equipment, a quality guitar amplifier and a Vibraphone. I would like for Millikan to purchase these items for future use. Is their money for these items?

Covey Book to Use Student Poems
Recently, Ms Jean Marie Van Dine submitted her students’ poems to Mr. Sean Covey. Mr. Covey is currently working on his follow up book to his 7 Habits for Highly Effective Teens. The 7 Habits for Highly Effective People is an in-service that has been given to the majority of staff at Millikan High School. Assistant Principal, David Downing, has used his facilitation and training skills to in-service our staff. Mr. Covey wrote to Ms. Van Dine, “Thank you so much for the great poems you sent me. I believe I will use several of them in my new book.”

Millikan Surpasses API

We are thrilled to share this verification of the hard work and focus at Millikan High School. The API Growth Report was shared on 10/22/2003 and we have shown great gains. Our gains are school wide and in every sub group. Several of our subgroups made larger gains than the entire school, and all of our student groups showed improvement. We were required to increase our School wide API by 10 points and our subgroups by 8 points. School wide Millikan High School gained 50 points and our biggest subgroup gain was in the African American subgroup which showed a gain of 63 points.

The API is based on a formula that includes the CAT6, CAHSEE and the Content Standards Test in English, Math, Social Sciences and Science. Our API score is now 657. Thank you all for you hard work and diligence, "GO RAMS!" jc
