MILLIKAN HIGH SCHOOL
2800 Snowden Avenue, Long
Beach, California (562) 425-7441
Hello,
The beautiful thing about
this time of year is that our school year is rapidly drawing to a close. The sad thing about this time of year
is that we are going say goodbye to another senior class. This senior class has approximately 830
members who are schedule to "Walk Stage" on June 10th at 7:00
p.m. This has to be a proud day in
the life of parents throughout the city.
Heck I am proud that my little boy is going to graduate from
kindergarten, I will probably be ecstatic when my own children graduate from
high school. For all seniors, I
want say congratulations and wish you every success with your future. For all the parents, I want to say good
job!
Our Instrumental Music Department held their annual
banquet at "The Grand" in Long Beach. The banquet theme Pirates of the
Caribbean was attended by 280 students, friends and family. The student
musicians honored Millikan's
administrator David Downing, teachers Martin Korach, Mary Massich and music
supervisor Jan Bazja for their support of the Millikan Music Department. The
John Philip Sousa Award was given to Paul Curtis, National School Orchestra
Award was given to Rhea Rodrigues and the Louis Armstrong Award was given to
Jacob Beizer and Jordan Warkentin. Millikan's Orch-a-Band gave a thousand
dollars worth of music scholarships to deserving musicians and the Brandon
Shamburg Memorial scholarship went to Denia Bradshaw and Adrian Grijalva.
Our Teachers for Tomorrow program had their program
graduation last Friday night. The
event took place at the Aviation Technology Hangar at the Pacific Coast Highway
Campus of Long Beach City College.
The event was sponsored by the Seamless Education Organization, and there
were 60 prospective student/teacher graduates. 100% of our Teachers for
Tomorrow program graduates plan on going forward with a post-secondary
education. Over 180 students
and their family members participated in the event. Congresswoman Linda Sanchez, California Assemblyman Alan
Lowenthal, and LBCC President Jan Kehoe spoke to the attendees.
Our
school was recently mentioned in a Washington Post article. I am forwarding a link to you because I
thought that you might enjoy reading the article. It is very gratifying to have our school and programs
recognized for the good work that is happening at Robert A. Millikan High
School.
