Hello,

Last night and tonight the Robert A. Millikan High School Dance Department is presenting “Dance the Night Away.”  I just returned from the student assembly for this same performance and I must admit that I was quite impressed.  The student dancers did an excellent job and the dances were lively and well staged.  Thanks to all the young ladies and gentlemen who put in so many hours of preparation for this event.  Your hard work and dedication is evident.

Last night I also had the opportunity to visit the Millikan High School Wrestling team banquet.  The Wrestling Booster Club and Coach Thompson hosted the banquet.  Coach Thompson did a wonderful job of recognizing all his wrestlers.  He handed out approximately 180 certificates and as many as fifteen trophies to his squad.  The night just happened to fall on the birthday of Jackie Cataline, and the team wished Jackie a happy birthday.

For those of you who do not know, Jackie is the female member of the Ram’s Wrestling Team who was varsity Moore League champ in her weight division.  She won 30 varsity level matches during the season with 18 pins.    She went to the CIF competition and had 4 wins and 3 losses.    This is a remarkable accomplishment for any sophomore.  Great job, Jackie!

Millikan High School recently finished AP testing.  Robert A. Millikan administered approximately 330 AP tests over a two-week period of time.  The tests were given in such diverse subjects as Calculus and Spanish.  These tests are the culminating activity to some of the most rigorous classes on any high school campus.  If the students pass the test with three or better on a scale of one to five, they will receive college level credit for the class.  These students work very hard and are entitled to a well-deserved pat on the back.

Our Virtual Enterprise class, which is housed on the campus of Robert A. Millikan High School and funded by Regional Occupation Program (ROP), swept the Long Beach Press Telegram Stock Market Game.  Our Virtual Enterprise class won 1st, 2nd, and 4th place in a large contest.  Last year’s contest had approximately 70,000 participants.  Hurray for Virtual Millikan.

Congratulations to Charissa Goggins who has been elected as the Student Board Member Representative for the 2004/2005 school year.  Ms. Goggins will represent every student in the Long Beach Unified School District during School Board meetings in this very prestigious position.

The Kiwanis Club of Long Beach has recognized two of our students.  Julie Schumacher was given a 1st place scholarship, and Steve Martinez received a 2nd place scholarship.  The award they won is the Paul McClaughry – Matt Doyle Scholarship Service Award.  High school students established this award to support and build community service among Long Beach area youth and to recognize outstanding service.

The Exchange Club of Long Beach has bestowed two scholarships on Millikan High School students.  Domonique Reece and Justin Stark are the Millikan recipients of this prestigious award.

Congratulations to our own Nurse Pat Erlandson for being named School Nurse of the Year for 2004.  The Long Beach Nurses’ Association at their annual dinner on May 25th presented this award to Nurse Pat.  Although Nurse Pat was reticent to allow her name to be put into nomination, we all knew that she would win!

Mike Monaghan, our head counselor, is retiring.  Well, Mike has never been very retiring, but he is leaving the district after 38 years of service – 31 of those years here at Millikan as an English teacher, English Department Head, counselor, and since 1994, as our head counselor.

Mike has set up an account with the banker for the Michael Monaghan Scholarship.  His fondest wish is for the members of the Millikan community to donate to a fund that will help students in the future.  Your gift to honor Mike is tax deductible and will be acknowledged.  Checks payable to Millikan High School and earmarked Monaghan fund, or cash can be given to Suzanne English, the Millikan banker, or to Nancy Parsons, counselor.

One of our graduates from the class of 2003, Reesa Jones was recently appointed as one of the drum majors for the UCLA marching band.  Leading the Bruin band as a sophomore and also as the first female drum major is a great accomplishment for Ms. Jones.  Congratulations to Reesa and her high school band teacher, Ms. Bonnie Annes.    You both can be proud of your accomplishments!

The Millikan High Softball team had a very effective season this year.  Congratulations to Coach Lynn Curylo, her staff and her athletes for winning first place in all levels of Moore League competition.  Kara Harper won the Moore League Co – MVP award.  Kara is the daughter of our very own teacher, Mr. Don Harper, and she is awesome on the mound.  Finally, the softball ladies received the Academic Champion Award for all spring semester sports, which is a recognition for which Ms. Curylo is extremely proud.  Congratulations to all our shining stars

As we proceed head long towards the end of the school year I wanted to share with you our upcoming finals testing schedule.  It is necessary for all students to attend all their classes every day.  June 10th is graduation day for our Senior class and they will graduate at Veteran’s Stadium on Clark Avenue at 7:00 p.m.  Underclassmen are expected to attend classes on June 10th.
