Hello again,

Although it seems like I just finished one of these updates regarding Millikan activities, there is a great deal happening at this time that I would like to share.  As we wind down the school year with just sixteen days left until graduation, things are not slowing down they literally are winding up!  Campus life is never dull and at this time of year, campus life is a whirlwind of activity.

Long Beach Unified School District was recently named the “Top Urban School District in the United States.”  This award was not only prestigious as an honor, but there was also $500,000 in scholarship money associated with this award.  The Broad Foundation gave $10,000 to each recipient attending four-year colleges and $2,500 to students attending two-year colleges.  Yesterday, the scholarship recipients were named and Robert A. Millikan High School has four students who qualified.  Ana Barajas, Sothea Ouch, Christina Ung and Christina Virosteck are the winners of these scholarship awards.  Congratulations to all of you!

Twelfth grader, Edgar Cobian recently received a $1,000 scholarship from Operation Jumpstart.  Out of the 20 eligible students he won the only scholarship.  There are many of our students who are winning various scholarships on a daily basis, if I do not mention their accomplishment I am sorry.  There are so many positive things happening at Robert A. Millikan High School that it is difficult to keep up!

“I would like to invite you to come to Millikan tonight between 6:30 and 8:30 pm to view the QUEST senior projects that will be on display.  There will be a huge variety of projects, from business plans to architecture to fine art to film to performances.  I highly recommend the student films-- they are exceptional.  So, if you have the time and inclination, our students would love to feel your support.”  I copied this information from an e-mail from Mr. Tom Lind, QUEST Lead Teacher.

Last night, I had the privilege of being present during the choir’s Spring Concert.  The event took place in the auditorium and there seemed to be hundreds of students performing.  The singers, under the leadership of Mr. John Harvey, did an excellent job.  The music was quite enjoyable and I especially enjoyed the Frank Sinatra selections that were presented.  The evening finished with all 200 choir students on the stage at one time singing a Gospel tune, “True Light.”  Senior, Drake York led the choir for this presentation and sophomore, Allysse Sweat performed a solo.  I took my nine-year-old son to this event and I was surprised to hear him singing along to this song.  The feeling of the moment caught him and he had a great time!

On Thursday, May 20th at 6:30 p.m. the Music Department will present an Instrumental Concert.  This event will also be held in the auditorium and if last night is any indication, this also promises to be an exciting performance.  Please come out and support the students during this free concert.

Our Badminton team has been extremely successful this year and last night Millikan was involved in the first round of the playoffs versus Huntington Beach.  The Rams won the contest 14 to 5 and are going on to face Villa Park in the next round of playoffs.  The game will be on Thursday at 3:15 p.m. at the Orange County Badminton Center.

Congratulations to both our Softball team and our Baseball team on their first round CIF playoff games.  The girls will face Thousand Oaks at home on Friday, May 21st at 3:15 p.m.  The boys will face the Cresenta Valley Falcons on Friday at Casey StengalField in Glendale at 7:00 p.m.  Directions can be found at the following website www.cvfalconsbaseball.homestead.com . Best wishes to all our teams involved in CIF playoffs!

As many of you parents of Senior are very aware, this Saturday is the Millikan Senior Prom.  I have a good idea how you all feel since my family and I are currently hosting a German foreign exchange student and she attended her Senior Prom last Friday at Lakewood High School.   Prom night is such a special evening for all students and we wish them the most wonderful night of their young lives.  I want to put out this cautionary note about young people mixing alcohol and drugs into this evening.  During this time of year, statistics have shown that more young people are hurt than at any other time of the year due to drinking and driving.  Please speak to your students and let them know that they can have a great time, but we all just want them to be safe.  Students have also been warned, via the bulletin, that they are not allowed to rent rooms at the Hyatt.

Finally, I want to announce the retirement of Mr. Mike Monaghan, our Head Counselor at Millikan for the last 10 years.  Mike started his career in Long Beach as an English teacher in 1966 and transferred to Millikan High School in 1970.  He served as a counselor for a short period at Franklin Middle School and then returned to RAMHI as a counselor.  Mr. Monaghan plans on taking life easy and enjoying some time traveling.  At this time, we are pleased to announce that the new Head Counselor for Robert A. Millikan High School will be Ms. Karen Briggs.  Karen is currently our 11th grade counselor for A – L and she was selected as the replacement for Mr. Monaghan after a grueling interview process.

Respectfully Submitted,

Jeff
