Millikan Technology News

Hello, I wanted to share some news about the web site and resources that you may find useful in your classroom.

Millikan Message Board
The Millikan message board became active in February.  What is a message board you ask? It is similar to email but allows for an open dialogue about a subject. Once a forum subject is started any registered user can post a message to the board.

Site council, academies, departments and support  functions can be enhanced through this system. Meeting minutes can be placed here. Discussions about block schedule or any school event like WASC or school goals can be shared here. Any ongoing conversations we have could be titles of a forums.

Registering will take about 2 minutes and I have created a video tutorial that has step by step instructions. Interested? Click here. Or copy and past the following URL:

Grades Online...Why?
Why post grades on line? If you have not seen or heard the praises from parents and students then you may not be able to answer this.  I have received many emails from parents stating that they like having access to their son/daughterÕs grades on line. Many like to track their progress. I have also received many emails asking when all grades will be posted. I know of one counselor who uses them because they are more recent than the six week progress reports. An effective strategy for a counselor when discussing grades with a student.  ÒIÕm LovinÕ this new grading system!Ó said Greg Markell after moving from his home made spreadsheet.

Millikan Web Site Grows to Over 400,000 Visitors
To date we have had 400,287 hits since 12/2/02. People from Europe,  the Middle East and Asia have seen our web site. I suspect  many of these are former Millikan students who are in the military. We have about 1700 hits every day. The recent addition of a message board may prove to be useful for everyone. This new feature is on the intranet (only viewable from school). This method of communicating promotes a school wide community.

Great Resources
We have had several great workshops on Monday. The session on Practical Web Tips included strategies for fighting plagiarism and several great web sites. Here is list of three web sites shared. If you look at one site look at Bartleby.com. There you can find full text resources for books.

http://school.discovery.com
http://www.brainpop.com

It is very easy for students to use information without properly giving credit. If you have a paper that seems suspect try this. Locate Google.com or some other search engine that supports Ôphrase searchingÕ. Once there, enter a phrase from the paper in double quotes. The search engine will look for text that has the exact match. That is it! Look at the results and you will be surprised how well this works.

Hope you have read this far and find the information useful.
