Ram Marching Band
The award winning Music Department
at Millikan High School offers one of the most competitive programs
in the Long Beach Unified School District. Our ensembles travel
to festivals throughout the Southern United States, competing
with schools from around the nation. In addition, Millikan offers
the complete theatre experience by producing a major musical,each
year, which includes drama, dance, vocal music, instrumental music
and stage. These productions have included, Hello Dolly, Fiddler
on the Roof, The Sound of Music, Guys, and Dolls, Little Shop
of Horrors and Bye Bye Birdie. The Millikan family includes our
Orch-a-band parent booster club, Amadeus student music club, and
our outstanding faculty, which works together to support
and meet the needs of our music students. The Music program at
Millikan is designed to help our students grow and mature into
well-rounded musicians and individuals.
Orchestras
Symphony
Orchestra:
Orchestra is for advanced musicians who play a
string Instrument Only. (Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass) No
wind players. String players must have three years of instruction
at the middle school or one year of intensive private lessons.
Students must audition for placement in this group...........A
list of musicians will be given to the Counselors in June.
String Orchestra: String
Orchestra is for the string player with limited music experience.
In depth study on the basic concepts of string performance will
be emphasized. Open to all string players with a year or more
experience. No Beginners.............
Bands
Symphonic Winds: This group is for the advanced wind player
Mainly for the upper classman. The group also doubles as the Winds
for Orchestra. This group is chosen by audition only....................
Counselors will receive a list of members after auditions in June.
Concert Band: This group is for freshman and
the less experienced upper class wind players. Must have one or
two years of middle school participation in the music program.
NO Beginners...............
Marching Band: Marching
Band meets after school Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to
5:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. It counts
for PE credit. Members are required to attend band camp two to
three weeks prior to the start of school from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00
p.m. Five units of credit are earned. Students should also
enroll in either symphonic winds or Concert Band.
Percussion Ensemble: The Percussion ensemble is made up of percussionist who
make the Marching band drum line. This group is by audition only.
The students learn music for the Marching band, Symphonic Winds,
Orchestra, and percussion ensemble.
Jazz Ensembles
Jazz Ensemble A: Jazz
Ensemble is an “Audition only” group. Mostly upper
classman, auditions are held in early September. The group meets
0 period. Students should have knowledge of improvisation techniques
and be able to perform independently. Willingness to study music
Theory and ability to perform the Major and Minor scales is expected.
This group is in demand and performs at many events throughout
the school year. This group also performs at basketball games.
Jazz Ensemble B: This
group is for the freshman or the less experienced upper classman.
No Beginners.........
Stage Crew.: This
is limited to the sophomores, juniors, and seniors. NO FRESHMAN.
Instructors choice only. A list will be given to counselors in
May.....Limited to twenty students............
Choral Ensembles
Auditions for entrance into our
outstanding choral ensembles consist of singing simple scales,
ability to match pitches, and either the ability to sightsing
or a desire to learn to read music.
Vocal Ensemble:
A small, select group of singers who
perform advanced music, from renaissance madrigals to pop and
jazz. This outstanding choir performs often and is open
by audition to very experienced musicians.
Concert Choir:
A large mixed choir (boys and girls) for experienced
singers. Students in this
group sing challenging music and refine their ensemble singing
skills.
Cecilian Singers: Students in Cecilian Singers perform intermediate
choral literature written for treble voices. Primarily for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade girls with prior
choir experience at the High School level.
Choraliers: This group
is for 9th grade girls and performs music selected from many periods
and styles arranged for soprano, second soprano, and alto voices.
Students develop their singing voices and increase their ability
to sing in harmony. Participation in Choraliers prepares
students for more advanced groups.
Varsity Chorale: This group
is for 9th and 10th grade boys and performs many different types
of music arranged for tenor, baritone and bass voices. This
fun group sings music of all styles, including barbershop harmony.
Students develop their singing voices and increase their ability
to sing in harmony. Participation in Varsity Chorale prepares
students for more advanced groups.
