STUDENT
SPOTLIGHT
Vanessa
Calimquim is a sophomore PEACE student. Her quiet demeanor and
reserve may give some the impression that she is passive and non-aggressive;
however, Vanessa proves her mental and physical strength and competitive
edge in a rare art form, judo.
After
only being introduced to judo four years ago, Vanessa has created
quite a name for herself. She is ranked number one on the US roster
for the 96-pound weight class. Furthermore, Vanessa has been awarded
numerous medals for her accomplishments: the bronze at Senior
Nationals and as a team member of the Pan American USA Team, the
silver at Junior Olympics; and the gold at the California State
Championships , the US Judo Federation Junior Nationals, and the
US Judo Association Junior Nationals. Needless to say, she is
undeniably a force to be reckoned with.
Vanessa
is sponsored by Adidas. Her goals are to continue to make the
Pan American US Team. Currently, she is working on increasing
her weight so she can qualify for the Olympic Team (lowest weight
class for women is 105 pounds). In the future, her dream is to
represent USA and bring home the Olympic Gold.
Not
only is Vanessa dedicated to mastering her judo techniques, but
she also enjoys giving back to the community by teaching and coaching
younger kids on the team, as well as refereeing at local judo
tournaments. Vanessa claims, “ J udo has helped me to stay focused,
and it gives me the drive to always do well, on the mat and in
school.”
The
PEACE Academy is proud of Vanessa and all of her accomplishments.
Kudos Vanessa!

Thanks
to our supportive parents, students, and staff, the first annual

enjoyed holiday treats, fun activities, gifts, and a special audience
with Santa, himself!
Judy
Seal Bethune Scholarship (Class of 2008)
Everyday
in Long Beach , according to the City of Long Beach 10-Year Plan
to End Homeless, “nearly 4,475 adults and children are without
a home and hundreds more are on the verge of homelessness.” To
remedy the situation, Millikan High School 's P.E.A.C.E. Academy
Senior Class of 2008, along with the E.L.E.V.A.T.E program, established
a scholarship for three students at the Bethune Transitional Center
. This $200.00 scholarship was awarded to students who have demonstrated
academic achievement and outstanding citizenship in both their
school and community.
