An important function of the Office of Research, Planning, and Evaluation is to design and implement evaluation studies of district educational programs and policies. MAP²D is a comprehensive mathematics program implemented in most LBUSD elementary schools. Combining instructional and professional development components, the aim of MAP²D is to accelerate the progress of students so they can achieve at a proficient or advanced level on the California Standards Test
The MAP²D evaluation proceeded in two phases. The purpose of the first research phase was to measure overall program effects at the district level. The primary purpose of the second phase was to study implementation at the classroom level to determine which aspects of the program design were significant factors for realizing student achievement gains in math.
One of the functions of the Office of Research, Planning, and Evaluation is to provide course placement recommendations based on the student performance on state and district exams. This study examined the effects of course placement on students who enter middle school proficient in math. Longitudinal findings revealed that entering proficient students achieve higher test scores and are significantly more likely to complete Algebra I in middle school if initially placed in an Accelerated math track.
