How To Become A Mentor

To become a mentor, complete the following steps:

  1. Consult with and discuss becoming a mentor with your supervisor or employer, if applicable.
  2. Complete a VIPS (Volunteer in Public Schools) application

  3. Complete an Interest Survey

  4. Return both the VIPS application and Interest Survey to the Middle and K-8 Schools Office located at 1515 Hughes Way, Long Beach, CA, 90810. You may also e-mail the forms to .
  5. Obtain fingerprint clearance through the District if clearance is not already on file. Once your VIPS application and Interest Survey are received, you will be notified if fingerprint clearance is required.
  6. Upon receipt of the Interest Survey, approval of the VIPS application, and fingerprint clearance, a meeting will be arranged to discuss the program, mutual expectations and next steps.

Within a few short weeks, you can begin making a difference through mentoring!
