Elementary & K-8 Schools
Transitional Kindergarten is being provided as a response to recently passed legislation that changes the entry date for kindergarten from Dec. 2 to Sept. 1 (over the course of four years). Across the state of California, the kindergarten entry date will change over the next four years as follows:
2011-2012: no change
2012-2013: Nov. 1
2013-2014: Oct. 1
2014-2015: Sept. 1
As fewer and fewer students are eligible to start kindergarten because of the change in age eligibility, a new Transitional Kindergarten program will begin throughout the state of California.
Transitional Kindergarten is designed to meet the needs of students who will turn five between Sept. 1 and Dec. 2. For students who have fall birthdays, this program will include one year of Transitional Kindergarten followed by one year of standard Kindergarten.
Transitional Kindergarten in Long Beach Unified School District (4/5/11)
Long Beach Unified School District is a part of a statewide group considered “early implementers” of Transitional Kindergarten programs. With a four-year history of Preppy Kindergarten, LBUSD will increase the number of Transitional Kindergarten classrooms across the city in the 2011-2012 school year.
These classrooms will be held at locations throughout the city, will have a 20:1 teacher to student ratio (for 2011-2012) and will be comprised primarily of students with fall birthdays.
