The School Recreation office runs after school and summer programs for the children of Long Beach. We train recreation leaders and recreation aides in the areas of reading with children, playground safety and public relations. The recreation office sends out monthly information packets to recreation leaders in all of the elementary schools containing after school sports and games and craft ideas.

We process recreation leaders and recreation aides as well as middle school sports coaches for hire. We employ more than 600 recreation workers and coaches in the district. We run summer recreation programs in several schools for four weeks in the summer. We receive playground equipment orders from recreation leaders each month. We order equipment and supplies, and deliver them to schools.

Summer Playground 2008
June 23 - July 25, 2008

Summer playground sites for 2008 are:
Barton, Cubberley, Fremont, Garfield, Henry, International, Longfellow, McKinley, Muir, Riley and Tincher.

" Wild Animal Safari" is the theme of this year's Summer Playground Program. The program is open to all school school-age children from grades 1 to 12.  Your child must have completed kindergarten to sign up.  Our program is a free, drop-in program, not a custodial care program.  This means that students may come and go from the program during the day.  This summer we will be providing our children with supervised activities, which will include craft making, field trips, sporting events, BBQ's, reading corners and on-site games and activities.

The 11 Summer Playground sites will be fully staffed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday.  Times may vary at selected sites.  The program will begin Monday, June 23, 2008, and continue for a five-week period, the last day being Friday, July 25, 2008.  A free lunch will be offered at selected sites.

Two traveling craft teams, with two leaders per team, will provide craft time at the academic school sites designated for special education classes.  These traveling craft teams are skilled in providing crafts suitable to the elementary students with a variety of special needs.
