Dear Parent/Guardian of selected students from the following schools:
The purpose of this letter is to inform you about a provision in a federal law, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, that will assist your child in improving his/her academic achievement. Students from low-income families at continuing Program Improvement schools, whose parents do not select a Program Improvement Public School Transfer, are eligible for free Supplemental Educational Services (SES). Information about Program Improvement Public School Transfer is scheduled to be sent home via US Mail in August.
Your child may be eligible for free Supplemental Educational Services (SES), which are tutoring services the district pays for. This tutoring will occur outside the regular school day with educational providers approved by the State Board of Education. If the number of eligible students who apply for the SES program exceeds the financial resources available, the lowest achieving students from low-income families will receive SES first. You have two opportunities to sign up for tutoring for the 2009-2010 school year. Applications for Enrollment Period 1: July 1 – July 31, are due July 31, 2009. Applications for Enrollment Period 2: August 17 – September 11, are due September 11, 2009. If your child qualified, you should have received an application in the US Mail in July 2009.
We have attached a complete list of State approved providers for our District. Information provided by the California Department of Education, regarding each provider, is available on the California Department of Education website: www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/ti/ap/sspsearch.aspx
and the Long Beach Unified School District website: www.lbschools.net. As you make your provider selection, please be aware that many of the providers may have a maximum number of students they can service. If our district reaches the maximum number, we may need to use a second, third, or fourth choice. The District will cover the costs of the Supplemental Educational Services (Not to exceed the amount of funds available through Title 1 for this purpose). Transportation will be the responsibility of the parent or guardian.
Parents may request assistance with the selection of a provider by contacting the Special Projects Services Office at (562) 997-8322. If you received a letter and are interested in signing up for this service, please complete and sign the Supplemental Educational Services application and return to:

Enrollment 2: Due by September 11, 2009
You will be notified in September regarding the status of your application. Tutoring will begin in October and must be completed by April 30, 2010. To be eligible for services, your child must be attending a Program Improvement School in September 2009, and you do not select the Program Improvement Public School Transfer option.
