The Long Beach Unified School District has actively recruited and hired more than 1,000 teachers within the last three years to reduce class size and to accommodate our growing student population. To meet the needs of new teachers who haven’t completed their certification, and to ensure quality instruction for all students, teachers holding “emergency” certifications are required to participate in alternative certification programs. Teacher certification is earned through a program incorporating standards-based pedagogy, field experience, and supportive coaching and mentoring. Non-credentialed multiple and single subject teachers interested in teaching before earning a full credential should seek advisement from their university for more information on intern programs.
The Education Specialist Intern Program at California State University, Long Beach is a unique partnership between the university and the district that also provides financial support towards the completion of the credential. Intern programs take about two years to complete, and they allow teachers the opportunity of taking classes with peers in a supportive environment.
