Library Media Programs

A certificated Teacher Librarian is part of the staff at most schools in the LBUSD. At many elementary schools, the TL is part-time and may be assisted by a classified Media Assistant. There is a full-time TL at each secondary school. Classes visit district libraries on both fixed and flexible schedules, depending on the school site. Each library supports the content standards of the school in the following ways:

Information Literacy:

The steps of the Information Literacy process:

  1. Formulate a question or define a problem.
  2. Identify a variety of sources.
  3. Select relevant sources.
  4. Gather information using relevant search strategies such as keywords and indexes.
  5. Interpret, evaluate, organize and synthesize information from multiple sources.
  6. Present information, giving credit to sources, in a well-supported, appropriate format: oral, written, graphic, multimedia.
  7. Evaluate the efficiency of the process and the effectiveness of the final product.

Technology:

Technology is a powerful tool for developing information literacy and  enhancing student learning. Students access information in the following ways:

  1. Locate materials using the OPAC (online public access catalog).
  2. Select keywords.
  3. Utilize Boolean logic.
  4. Choose from a variety of resources.
  5. Search the internet.
  6. Use search engines.
  7. Use online databases.
  8. Evaluate internet sites.
  9. Use word processing.
  10. Design products with Power Point or Hyperstudio.
  11. Design web pages.

Because of the vast amount of information now available at the touch of a button, it is important that students learn respect towards these resources and responsibility in using them.

Collaboration:

The Teacher Librarian and classroom teacher work as a team to plan research lessons that utilize print and non print resources.

  1. Design authentic learning tasks and assessments.
  2. Integrate information and communication skills required to meet curricular standards.
  3. Identify a variety of print, non-print and electronic information resources to achieve student learning.

A Teacher Librarian is a credentialed teacher with:

  1. An additional credential (Teacher Librarian Service Credential)
  2. Possibly an MLIS, MLS, MA or other degrees
