The Long Beach Unified School District has a long and proud history of strong music programs. Music instruction is provided to all students in the elementary grades by a staff of credentialed music teachers who travel to each school at least once a week. These lessons are also supplemented by the classroom teacher. New music texts along, with recording and supplemental materials, are available at every school site for use by the music teachers as well as the classroom teachers. The texts and the district music curriculum are aligned with the California Visual and Performing Arts Framework and the National Standards for Arts Education.
Interested students can also participate in instrumental music beginning in the third grade or chorus beginning in the fourth grade. Band, orchestra and chorus are also available at most middle schools and at every high school, where the students can also participate in jazz ensembles. The music programs at several of our schools have received statewide and even national honors and recognition for their excellence. In addition to performing with their school ensembles, music students are also provided with opportunities to perform with the All-District Band, Orchestra, and Chorus, as well as at adjudicated festivals.
The school district has a strong collaboration with the Long Beach Symphony and other groups in the community. For more information on these additional opportunities for our students , please check out Special Events Page.
