The Long Beach Unified School District has been selected as a semi-finalist in the U.S. Department of Education's National Awards Program for Model Professional Development. The awards honor schools and districts for making teacher and staff training a high priority and an important part of their school culture.
The Education Department recognizes professional development that is free of bias and accessible to all educators. Department officials also look for schools that are using staff development to do a better job of addressing the needs of all students.
Of the 80 public and private schools and districts that applied for the award, 15 semi-finalists were chosen to receive a site visit. Findings from LBUSD's April visit are being submitted to the National Awards Panel that will make final recommendations to Richard W. Riley, U.S. Secretary of Education. He will announce the national winners early this fall.
