Choura Wins Close School Board Vote

Election results indicate James Choura will become the newest member of the Board of Education of the Long Beach Unified School District. With 52.3 percent of the vote, Choura leads Jeannine McManigal-Ball by 527 votes, 5,888 to 5,361. Some absentee ballots must still be counted, but they are not expected to change the outcome of the election, according to Deputy City Clerk Becky Burleson. In the April primary, McManigal-Ball received 3,848 votes and Choura, 3,019 in a field of five candidates. The June 4 runoff election of the top two vote getters determined who for the next four years will represent District 5--which includes major areas of east Long Beach and Lakewood. Choura, a local business owner, is a Lakewood resident, a parent of two LBUSD students and is the president of the Long Beach Education Foundation. District 1 Board Member Mary Stanton ran unopposed and was certified elected in April. District 3 Board Member Suja Lowenthal was elected in the April primary with 2,527 votes. Stanton, Lowenthal and Choura are scheduled to begin their new terms on July 15. Board Member Karin Polacheck on that date completes 14 years of service on the Board of Education. She did not seek re-election.
