'Nerd Herd' Heads to World Competition

The self-described Nerd Herd Team 687A from the California Academy of Mathematics and Science is heading to the VEX Robotics World Championship sponsored by the Northrop Grumman Foundation in Louisville from April 19 to 25.

"Nerd Herd 687A has experienced some highs and lows this season, but through it all the team members and my other co-captain, Edward Rodriguez, sought to design, build and program a robot that could rise to the challenges presented this year," said Ian Clavio, team co-captain.  "Participating in the VEX Robotics Competition in school has strengthened my interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and given me the skills I need to succeed well beyond high school.  The last time a Nerd Herd team qualified for Worlds was in 2013.  I’m excited to attend the VEX Robotics World Championship to compete with teams from around the world."

Teammates are Michele Boateng-Lee, Joseph Canalita, Gabriel Carrera, Linda Castellanos, Jason Culberson, Saingyou Eung, Carlos Hinojosa, Reggie Hughes, Juan Martinez, Gracelyn Pham, Emily Rodriguez, Emily Teranishi, Ashley Torres, Bradley Turcios, Joshua Visperas, Maya Washington and Jeannie Yang.
