Powell Wins Honor for School Design

The Colin L. Powell Academy for Success in the Long Beach Unified School District has won a national award for innovative school design. Powell was one of only 12 schools nationwide to receive the Schools as Centers of Community Recognized Value Award. Winners were selected for adherence to stringent principles adopted last year by the U.S. Department of Education, American Institute of Architects, Council for Educational Facilities Planners International, Urban Educational Facilities, and the American Association of Retired Persons. Powell opened in fall 1999. The innovative two-story modular construction allowed workers to build the school in only eight months. The national awards went to schools that enhance learning and accommodate all students, serve as centers of community, are built as a result of planning that involves all stakeholders, provide for health, safety and security, effectively use resources, and allow for adaptability to changing needs. The awards were announced last month on the School Construction News and Design Share website. For more information about the award, visit the website at designshare.com.
