Schools in the Long Beach Unified School District are doing a better job educating students than comparable schools statewide. Confirming this fact is the similar schools ranking--one of the most valid comparisons on the new California Academic Performance Index (API) results released recently. Most schools here ranked above other schools throughout the state serving a similar, diverse cross-section of students.
The similar schools ranking compares each school with the 100 schools statewide most like it in mobility, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, percentage of students receiving free or reduced price lunch, limited English proficiency, parent education level, percent of fully credentialed teachers, percent of teachers with emergency credentials and average class size.
The state's similar schools rank shows where each school scores among its 100 comparison schools. Many LBUSD schools had a decile rank of 10, placing them in the top 10 percent of similar schools. Most schools in the Long Beach Unified School District earned a rank of 8, 9 or 10, placing them among the top 30 percent of comparable schools throughout California.
