School nurse Lucy Carbajal earned a commendation recently from the Long Beach Police Department for saving the life of a distraught person who was about to jump from the 710 Freeway overpass at Wardlow Road. Carbajal saw the person leaning beyond the guardrail, pulled her car over and pleaded with him not to jump. Her actions gave police time to approach the subject and pull him away from the guardrail. With numerous calls to 911, Carbajal was the only one who stopped while on her way to work. Police credited Carbajal with saving the life of the subject and the lives of innocent people on the freeway who could have been affected by his actions.
Long Beach Unified School District Head Start Director Linda James Perry was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to serve on the California Advisory Council on Early Learning and Care.
