Schools, staff and students in the Long Beach Unified School District will be invited to assist in the effort to assure a full and accurate count in the 2000 Census which will begin in mid-March. Severe undercounting of the population of the Long Beach area in the 1990 Census cost local cities and schools approximately $50 million in federal and state funding during the past decade. At least 40,000 fewer residents were counted than actually lived here.
Federal funds that should have been directed here instead were sent elsewhere to communities that did a better job of counting their population. Each person counted in the 1990 Census generated an estimated $1,200.
