The Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting for 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 to address the ongoing budget crisis. The meeting will be held in the Community Room at the Long Beach Unified School District’s Administration Building, 1515 Hughes Way, Long Beach.
The Board adopted its 2009-10 budget during its June 16 meeting. California school districts are required to adopt their budgets before the July 1 start of the new fiscal year. However, the State of California is struggling with a $24 billion deficit, and public school officials statewide remain uncertain how much funding school districts will receive in the coming year. In addition, state officials continue to propose ever-higher cuts to public education.
The state so far this year has proposed $169 million in cuts to the Long Beach Unified School District for the three-year period starting with the recently completed 2008-09 school year and continuing through the 2010-11 school year. The general fund, or operating budget, for the Long Beach Unified School District is $752.7 million.
