CDE - Transitional Kindergarten FAQs
Transitional Kindergarten is being provided as a response to passed in 2010 legislation that changed the entry date for kindergarten from Dec. 2 to Sept. 1. Across the state of California, the kindergarten entry date changed over a four year period as follows:
2011-2012: no change
2012-2013: Nov. 1
2013-2014: Oct. 1
2014-2015: Sept. 1
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is an exciting, new educational opportunity for children born in the fall. Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a two-year program that provides children, with birthdays between September 2 and December 2, a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate, taught by credentialed teachers. Parents have a choice to enroll their student in Transitional Kindergarten or wait the additional year when the student is eligible for Kindergarten.
The youngest students in a kindergarten class risk struggling academically, emotionally, and/or socially. Transitional Kindergarten ensures that children have these pivotal skills, which are foundations to successful learning, when they begin kindergarten. Transitional Kindergarten bridges the path between preschool and kindergarten.
These classrooms are located throughout the city and have a 25:1 teacher to student ratio. The classes are comprised primarily of students with fall birthdays.
