About Work-Based Learning

Work-Based Learning (WBL) provides opportunities for specialized job training through a well-established series of programs, utilizing school and community sites. WBL is designed to respond to the changing needs of business and industry in Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill and Avalon.

Purpose of the Work Based Learning

The purpose of the WBL is to provide high-quality job training courses to prepare high school students for full or part-time employment, for advanced training and for higher education.

Service Learning


  • All LBUSD students will demonstrate civic responsibility and enhance their awareness of career opportunities by completing Student Service Learning (SSL) as a condition of receiving a high school diploma (40-hour minimum).
  • Service Learning is a hands-on, experiential, authentic learning experience.
  • Service Learning and Community Service experiences also give students a chance to make a positive contribution to their community.
